With spring just around the corner, many homeowners have already started gathering their tools to prepare for the busy yardwork that lies ahead. Before you start those engines, your outdoor power tools will benefit from a quick tune-up after hibernating all winter.

Proper and regular maintenance ensures your tools are consistently running at peak performance and it also extends the life of the products. Dealers from Husqvarna Canada, the world’s largest producer of outdoor power products, offer tips and maintenance pointers so homeowners across the country can have a hassle-free start to their yardwork this season.

  • Sharpen/replace blades: Using dull mower blades can damage grass, but sharpened blades will ensure your lawn is getting a clean cut to foster healthy growth.
  • Drain fuel and change oil: Drain all fluids from your mower before you start working, as old fluids and gas could result in friction and trouble starting.
  • Check the filter: A dirty air filter puts extra stress on your lawn mower and slows down operation efficiency.
  • Warm up your equipment: After a season of storage, make sure that you let your mower warm up for a few minutes before use.
  • Inspect your equipment: Look for loose belts, missing or damaged parts. Damaged equipment should be repaired as soon as possible to avoid injury.
  • Clean your equipment before use: Before using your equipment after storage ensure to remove dirt, oil, and grass that were stuck in the machinery during the off season, allowing your mower to run more efficiently and last longer.
  • Check your tires: Make sure to inspect and inflate your lawn mower tires to the recommended pressure for optimal performance.

1: Wearing spiked shoes helps aerate the lawn.
MYTH

  • While you can buy spiked shoes touted for aerating lawns, you won’t achieve much aeration using them.
  • Spiked shoes don’t work because they impact too small an area and further compact already compacted soil.
  • The best way to aerate a lawn is to extract plugs of soil with an Aerator machine such as the Husqvarna AR19H

2: Leaving grass clippings on the lawn is not lazy but healthy. FACT

  • Recycling your grass is actually very healthy.
  • Grass clippings are 75 to 80 percent water and decompose quickly, adding nitrogen to soil.
  • Leaving grass clippings on the lawn after mowing is called grass cycling and actually saves you time and money.
  • When purchasing a mower, consider getting one with 3-in-1 capabilities so that you can mulch, bag, or side discharge depending on the grass condition and time of year.

.3 : Nature takes care of itself; using fertilizer is unnecessary. MYTH

  • First of all, the lawn is not a natural environment.  All grass needs a low level of supplemental nutrients.
  • When clippings are collected, the soil is robbed of nutrients that should be recycled back into the soil.
  • Furthermore, most lawns are grown on compacted, urban soils that are not ideal for growth. Nutrient supplements in the form of fertilizer are needed.

4: I won’t have to mow as often if I cut the grass short. MYTH

  • If you cut it super short, you may add a few days between mowings, but you also risk damaging the lawn.
  • Grass that’s too short allows sunlight to reach weeds, which quickly grow and wrestle grass for footing.
  • Shorter grass also has a more shallow root system, which means it succumbs easily to drought.
  • Follow ⅓ rule when cutting. Always, cut the top ⅓ of the the grass blades.
  • When considering a new mower, look for easy height adjustment mechanism to help quickly adjust mowing height as required.

5: Daily watering is necessary to grow a healthy lawn. MYTH

How much water your lawn needs depends on a variety of factors, including grass type, air temperature and soil type. Infrequent, deep irrigation is better than frequent, short watering. It results in grass with deeper, healthy roots and fewer diseases.
